Eighteenth century taverns were places people went to quaff a pint of ale, catch up on the village gossip, or discuss the latest news from England. Some were refined, others rowdy, but they all played an important and colorful role in the colonial community.

On March 2 and 9, from 7 until 10 p.m. Old Fort Niagara will host its eighth annual Tavern Nights, a fund-raising event that recreates a late-18th century tavern at the Fort Niagara Officers Club. In addition to enjoying live period music, traditional beverages and tavern fare, patrons will interact with a wide variety of historical characters. Colonial Politicians will argue about the latest acts of Parliament, recruiters will "beat" for British soldiers, and masters will search for runaway servants. Taverngoers can take part in games of chance and sing along to 18th century bawdy songs.

Tickets to Taven Night are priced at $30.00 per person. They must be purchased in advance by calling the Fort at (716)745-7611 Monday through Saturday. Proceeds will benefit the Fort's Educational Programs.
