Take a Breath for Life Lung Cancer Awareness Fundraiser

The Take a Breath for Life foundation is hosting a cyclo Cross bike race. Our mission is to heighten awareness and promote education and research for Lung Cancer issues. Since Lung Cancer is the number 1 cancer killer that unfortunately receives less positive promotional exposure and far less financial support has motivated us to work hard to realize our goals. Being a non-smoker who is battling lung cancer makes it that much more personal and has helped me see that many of us diagnosed with this cancer are non-smokers (17.9%) and need to fight the stigma attached to it extra hard.

Some Stats to ponder:

Lung Cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in every ethnic group.

Lung Cancer is the 2nd leading cause of ALL deaths in the U.S.

Lung Cancer Overtook Breast Cancer as the leading cause of cancer death among women in the US in 1987 and now claims the lives of more women each year than breast, ovarian and cervical cancers combined.

The overall five year survival rate for women with lung cancer remains well below those of other women's cancers

Over 25,000 women who have never smoked will be diagnosed with lung cancer this year

Federal research funding levels for fiscal year 2012 (dollars per death) Breast $26,398, Cervical $28,436, Uterine $4,993 Ovarian $9,398 and Lung $1,442

Lung Cancer is the only cancer blamed on the patient.

Part of our mission is to raise money for lung cancer awareness, education and research. This year we will hold our third annual fund raiser as we have partnered with the East Aurora Bike Club to hold a cyclo cross bike race in Kummer Park the Town Park in Colden NY. This fund raiser will have theme baskets, raffles, food and entertainment along with the races. 100 % of this year’s proceeds will go to the Lung Cancer Alliance.
