USA Falls in Semifinals, Canada To Play For Gold

Buffalo (WKBW.com) It was the matchup that everyone wanted to see at the World Junior Hockey Championship, but it didn't live up to the hype. The United States had no answers for Canada on Monday night, and fell 4-1 in the semifinals. Team Canada advances to the gold medal game on Wednesday night, Team USA will now play for the bronze on Wednesday afternoon at the HSBC Arena.



A sea of red watched as Canada took the early lead. Curtis Hamilton would score the first goal of the game at the 2:38 mark. Quinton Howden would put Team Canada up 2-0 later in the first on a nice pass by Brett Connolly. The United States was out shot 12-5 in the first period.



Ryan Johansen scored on a 5-on-3 advantage for Canada in the second, Sabres prospect Zach Kassian added Team Canada's fourth goal in the third period. The lone goal for the United States came later in the third on the power play when Chris Brown would score with the man advantage.



Team Canada will now play Russia for the gold medal on Wednesday. Russia knocked off Sweden in the shoot-out in the earlier semifinal. The United States plays Sweden for the Bronze at 3:30 on Wednesday afternoon,.
