Amherst, New York (August 2, 2011) ( release) - I am a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and I have served in the Navy Reserves for almost nine years. Last week I received my orders for recall to Active Duty at the Navy Operational Support Center in Buffalo.
My orders state that I am serving based on an Executive Order of the President dated 9/14/2001 and are in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. I will be on Active Duty on September 2, 2011. I have discussed this with Town of Amherst Human Resources Department and with our Town Attorney, Tom Jones, to plan for my absence. Tom Jones has reviewed Town Code and found the portion that prescribes what is to occur by law. He has stated that under my circumstances that my emergency successor list will provide for an interim person to fill my shoes.
Currently at the head of that list is my father, Richard R. Anderson Sr. I have spoken with him at length regarding these circumstances and Town government, and he looks forward to serving on the Town Board during the next year. I have chosen the most dedicated and knowledgeable public servant, who is removed from politics, and will serve in my absence with the honor befitting my military service and most importantly our Town.
It is my honor to serve our country and my community. It is my sincere hope that the attention drawn to this matter will highlight the continued sacrifice of other service members and the sacrifices of our military families. My service on the Amherst Town Board and in the military has allowed me to reflect on the thousands of Western New Yorkers that are dedicated to our communities and working to secure the future of our nation.
