Dunkirk, N.Y. (WKBW-TV) - Nearly 200 years ago it was built at Point Gratiot, along Lake Erie in Dunkirk.
An old 60 foot lighthouse that helped to guide ships headed for the Erie Canal.
Built in 1826-- and then replaced-- by a newer one several yards away, the old lighthouse was one of the first of it's kind built after the construction of the Erie Canal.
Many had thought the tower's foundation was long gone-- but heavy storms-- has unearthed part of it.
Now-- a team of archeologists are slowly-- and painstakingly working to restore it.
Eyewitness News takes you to the sight-- and gives you an inside look at the process.
