Lockport, N.Y. (WKBW release) -- Students at George Southard Elementary School in Lockport are celebrating the annual "Relay for Life" activity, featuring their favorite movies and fighting cancer all at the same time.

"The American Cancer society Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease, according to Relay For Life's website," said teacher Susan Gmerek, whose second-graders took part in the building-wide activity.

"My students were part of doing Relay For Life Hollywood style, focusing on the color purple," said Gmerek. "The door decorations focused on what Relay For Life means to each of us, and the students brainstormed ideas and came up with phrases to write on the doors."

"Popcorn and a Movie," was an area created to focus on writing about students' favorite movies and why they loved them, and the "Lights, Camera, Action" section included illustrations of movies with key words in the frames around the illustrations.

"The activity was a great success, with students having the opportunity to focus on something they love, movies, and work for a cause they know is worthy, supporting the fight against cancer," said Gmerek.
