Grand Island, N.Y. (WKBW release) -- It’s been called a "field of dreams", and a new Grand Island baseball diamond for children and young adults with disabilities is a bit closer to reality, thanks to a $75,000 matching grant from Lions Club International.

The funding request came from the Grand Island Lions Club, which, along with Miracle League, raised equal funding (for a total of $150,000) through their local efforts, to help pay for the project.

The Sabres Miracle League Field is set to open late this summer at Grand Island’s Veterans Park, featuring a baseball field covered with a rubberized surface, which will accommodate those with wheelchairs and other mobility assistance devices utilized by those with physical challenges.

Along with the Grand Island Lions Club and Lions Club International, other donors to the project include the Buffalo Sabres, the Town of Grand Island, and numerous volunteers who donated labor and materials for the field.
