JAMESTOWN, NY ( release ) The Jamestown Ironmen third period comeback fell short as they fell 2-1 to the first place Port Huron Fighting Falcons in a physical game at the Jamestown Savings Bank Arena.
Early in the game it was evident this game would be different than Friday night. The Ironmen started their energy line of Zack Szajner, Cody Sarmiento and Luc Gerdes and they immediately set a physical tone to the game. The physical play continued as the penalty minutes and power play opportunities mounted for both teams.
It was Port Huron that would eventually score first on a shorthanded goal by Rick Derosa that beat Ironmen goalie Joe Gladnick on the glove side. Port Huron led 1-0 after one period and outshot Jamestown 9-8.
Port Huron proved to be the better team in the second 20 minutes of play. They dominated Jamestown and forced Jamestown to spend most of the period in their own zone. Gladnick was sharp for Jamestown but eventually allowed a long wrist shot from Kody Polin to beat him on the glove side.
Despite being dominated in the period, Jamestown was not without their chances. Anthony Coles was stopped on a clear breakaway by Falcons goalie Max Milosek, who was sharp all evening. Jamestown had another opportunity late in the period but Brett Szajner was stopped by Milosek on a point blank chance.
The Ironmen put on the pressure in the third period as they looked to tie the score. Zack Szajner finally put Jamestown on the board with 5:14 left but Jamestown was never able to get the equalizer.
The Ironmen are off next weekend and will return home on February 2nd when they host the Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings in a three game series.
