Town of Cheektowaga (WKBW release) -- New York Congressman Brian Higgins on Thursday announced that the Bellevue Volunteer Fire Company has been awarded $90,000 in federal funding through the United States Department of Homeland Security Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Program.

“Western New York relies heavily on dedicated volunteers willing to answer the call when emergencies arise,” said Higgins. “These federal resources will help Bellevue meet the need for new firefighters as they continue an outstanding record of service in Cheektowaga.”

The Bellevue Volunteer Fire Company, located on Como Park Boulevard in the Town of Cheektowaga, has served the town’s ninth fire district for over 60 years. Funding from the grant will be used to help the department recruit and retain new firefighters.

SAFER grants are aimed at increasing the number of firefighters and enhancing their ability to ensure that their communities have adequate protection from fire and fire related hazards. These awards are administered by the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration.
