BUFFALO, NY ( WKBW ) On this Fourth of July weekend, Assemblyman Sam Hoyt was on hand to unveil plans for a new veterans memorial at Forest Lawn Cemetery. It will pay homage to those veterans from recent conflicts in the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan, and Iraq.
The memorial was brought about after a local soldier, Sergeant Frank World, gave his life for his country. But there was no memorial to honor recent veterans, so thanks to a grant from New York State, the monument will become a reality.
"I'm very happy they're putting a monument here, not only for my brother, but for all who are fighting. It brings awareness to the war, and it needs to be recognized that there are a lot of young boys who are losing their lives in these wars," Candy Rodriguez, Sergeant World's sister, said Saturday.
Local veterans from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines were on hand for the unveiling of the plans. The memorial will be located in "Field of Valor" at Forest Lawn. The monument is scheduled to be completed and dedicated on September 11th of this year.
