Shaun Seufert, a Public Affairs Specialist with AAA of Western and Central New York says this weekend's travel predictions show a dramatic increase over last year.
"AAA is expecting a 17.7 percent increase in the amount of people traveling by automobile over the Fourth of July weekend. Now that's a national number but it's a big number and it represents about 90 percent of all people traveling this weekend," said Seufert.
Why the big jump? Analysts say the economy over the past few years prevented people from traveling. Now there is a pent up demand.
"The landscape in the economy has changed this year and the travel industry continues to respond with significant savings and travelers are going farther on their money," said Seufert.
While many will hit the road for the holiday....
"Some popular destinations out of town are Hilton Head, Hershey Park, Cedar Point in Pennsylvania," said Seufert.
...Just as many will take advantage of local attractions like the Darien Lake Theme Park.
"This weekend is supposed to be really nice weather and we've had a really nice response to the Splash Town Water Park. But, what makes it really special for Fourth of July is we do have a special fire works show following the Laser Blast, so its perfect for families," said Cassandra Okon, the Public Relations Supervisor for Darien Lake Park.
And families are also checking out local concerts like this one in Downtown Buffalo, or just relaxing under the sun and enjoying the view.
If you are planning a road trip make sure you check the tires and the oil. AAA says they expect to go on about 2600 roadside assistance calls this weekend.
