Canadian Authorities Investigate Lake Erie Drowning

September 27, 2013 Updated Jun 28, 2010 at 2:50 PM EDT

Release from Niagara Regional Police - On Monday June 28th, 2010 at approximately 5:30 am, uniform members of the Niagara Regional Police, 6 District, along with members of the Niagara Emergency Medical Service and Wainfleet Fire Department attended Augustine Beach, Lake Erie, Wainfleet, for a report of a drowning.

Emergency personnel located a male lying on the beach after having been under the water for several minutes. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.

The deceased has been identified as 21 year old Welland resident, Andrew Mooney. During the early morning hours of June 28th, 2010, a group of six friends attended Augustine Beach and entered the water. Poor weather and water conditions, including high winds, rough waves and a strong undertow were all present at the time.

All six were unexpectedly swept into deep water and overcome by the waves. The deceased, tragically, was unable to swim back to shore and drowned.

Police investigation at this point has revealed that alcohol does not appear to have been a cause in the drowning. Police would like to remind the public that there are areas within our public beaches where strong undertow currents and waves exist which can change very quickly. Always take into consideration the weather and water conditions when in and around our area waterways.
