NORTH TONAWANDA, NY (WKBW) -- A young Marine from North Tonawanda made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense reports that Lance Corporal Timothy Serwinowski died June 21st while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force out of Camp Lejeune, N.C. Lance Corporal Timothy Serwinowski was 21 years old, and a graduate of North Tonawanda High School. He also attended Niagara County Community College before joining the Marines.

"He was really easy going, I remember when he would play football and they'd have two day practices and it didn't matter how bruised up he was or battered he was he always kept going," said North Tonawanda High School Teacher Peter Fezer. "His smile lit up the classroom and he'd never give up."
