NIAGARA FALLS, NY (WKBW) -- 22-month-old Carmen Colucci died April 8th at Children's Hospital. One week earlier, Niagara Falls Police responded to the Colucci home on 22nd Avenue.
Police say that the infant was left in a portable crib, with a mattress placed on top, and a television on top of that. It was intended to keep the infant Carmen and her one-year-old sister inside. Police say Carmen tried to get out anyway, wedging her head between the mattress and crib, suffocating her.
Today the parents are charged with the child's murder. Randy and Nicole Colucci face charges of second degree murder, manslaughter, and endangering the welfare of a child.
Police believe the children were left in the crib with the mattress on top for seventeen hours.
"My children are innocent. The mattress was put there to protect her," Theresa Colucci, Carmen's grandmother said Monday, "they're not guilty not of murder, not of manslaughter..."
The couple has 4 other children, who are being cared for by social services. The couple is also expecting another child. They are being held on 75 thousand dollars bail each.
The couple is scheduled be back in Niagara Falls Court in September for their pre-trial conference.
