No Western New York school district spends its money more efficiently than Clarence does. And none is a bigger overachiever than Sherman.

That's according to Business First's specialized ratings, which have been designed to illuminate specific qualities of district performance.

Williamsville is No. 1 in this year's academic rankings, which are of primary importance. But the specialized ratings shine a spotlight on other districts that have strong characteristics worthy of attention.

Full details are available in Business First's 2010-2011 Guide to Western New York Schools. Highlights are also available at the newspaper's website: buffalo.bizjournals.com.

These are the winners in the seven special categories:

1. Cost-effectiveness (districts that achieve educational excellence despite spending a relatively low amount of money): Clarence.

2. Overachievement (districts that have strong academic records, even though a substantial number of their students live in poverty): Sherman.
