GOWANDA, NY ( WKBW ) On September 26, 2008, Officer Jason Miller was shot in his bullet-proof vest while attemptimg to make an arrest in Gowanda. The search for a suspect continued for months, but no one was arrested or charged. Today, there is new information into what really happened that night.
According to the Erie County District Attorney and the Gowanda Police Department, Jason Miller staged his own shooting. He hung his bullet-proof vest from a tree and shot it with non-police issued gun. He then reported that he had been shot.
"This is a small community they're very supportive of the police department and the community and the officers," said Detective Jen Alessi, "and to deceive, lie and stage something as such its unbelievable, its just so hard to digest."
Miller resigned shortly after the shooting because of a different incident where he was charged with professional misconduct. The motive for why Miller would stage his own shooting is still unknown.
"I don't know why he did what he did. Only he can answer that. But it's beyond my wildest dreams why someone would do such a thing," said Alessi.
Jason Miller was originally scheduled to appear today in court for sentencing, but that date has been postponed.
