NEW YORK, NY (WKBW) -- Delegates for the New York State Republican Party voted to endorse Rick Lazio as the party nominee in the race for governor.
Lazio received 59.7 percent of the delegation vote, with Steve Levy receiving 28.4 percent, and Buffalo businessman Carl Paladino netting 7.9 percent of the delegate votes.
With Levy receiving over 25 percent of the delegate vote, party officials needed to on vote whether to allow him on the ticket for a Republican primary race. That vote was defeated 58% NO to 42% YES.
Paladino has promised to petition his way onto the party primary ballot.
If there is a primary race, the winner would face Democratic nominee Andrew Cuomo in the general election for state governor.
