September 27, 2013 Updated May 21, 2010 at 7:23 AM EDT

Unemployment in the Buffalo-Niagara Falls area was at 8.2 percent in April, highest among all Upstate New York metropolitan areas and up from 7.8 percent a year ago.

Only New York City - at 8.4 percent - had a higher jobless rate, the state Department of Labor reported Thursday. And, none of the other 11 metros statewide had an unemployment rate above 8 percent. The unemployment rate across New York last month was 8.4 percent - the best since May 2009.

Rochester was at 7.4 percent, down from 7.5 percent, year-over-year. Syracuse had a jobless rate of 7.5 percent compared to 7.7 percent in April 2009.

Private-sector jobs declined by 1,100, or 0.3 percent in the Buffalo market in the past year while nonfarm jobs declined by 1,200, or 0.2 percent.

Rochester's private sector lost 1,900 jobs, or 0.5 percent and nonfarm jobs dropped 1,900, or 0.6 percent.
