BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) --- 90 year old John Bunz pled not guilty to the brutal murder of his 89 year old wife Virginia today (Tuesday) in State Supreme Court. He spoke only to say that he understood the second degree murder charge, which would send him to jail for 25 years to life if convicted.
The prosecutor offered what he calls strong evidence against Bunz. According to court documents, police claim that Bunz confessed quote "My wife and I had a dispute and i took a hammer to her. Then I was struggling with her and I put a pillow over her... Then there was a struggle, I kept the pillow over her... I don't know, I think she's... my daughter says she's dead." He then claims he tried to take his own life.
District Attorney Frank Sedita says Bunz allegedly struck his wife with a hammer 29 times in the head. "What a terrible thing for them. Your father has killed your mother in their golden years. And has done so not in a gentle way to say farewell, but in an extraordinary violent way."
The 90 year old appeared for todays court appearance with a walker. Bunz's attorneys discussed taking the no responsibility or insanity defense. Sedita was asked about whether Bunz's frail state could affect the case. "If the evidence demonstrates that he intentionally murdered his wife, and evidence further indicates that he is not insane, then the defendant should be responsible like anyone else would be for that kind of a crime." Sedita says.
The possibility of a plea deal was discussed in court today. Bunz is being held without bail until his next court appearence May 28th.
If convicted, Bunz faces 25-years to life in prison.
