BUFFALO, NY ( WKBW ) A community of family and friends gathered at Saint Joseph Cathedral in Buffalo Sunday, paying their respects to firefighters who died in the line of service.

Daniel Cunningham, President of Buffalo Professional Firefighters Local 282 told Eyewitness News, "Today is a special day, a memorial for all of our fallen brothers."

Organizers paid a special tribute to Lieutenant Charles "Chip": McCarthy, and Firefighter Jonathan Croom. Both men died while fighting a fire at a store on the east side last summer.

Croom's Mother Angie Heusinger said, "It was a little overwhelming you know, bringing back a lot of memories, a lot of sad memories."

Organizers also honored firefighters who died in the propane explosion in Buffalo back in 1983.

After the service, the group marched to the Hyatt Regency for a breakfast, united as family for the same cause.
