A new memorial at Buffalo and Erie County's Naval and Military Park downtown honors Western New Yorkers who've been awarded the Purple Heart. The memorial was dedicated with a ceremony featuring veterans and elected leaders on Saturday. The memorial fits in with the other monuments next to the naval ships and it complements the park's mission of recognizing the contributions of those who've served in the armed forces.
"These names on these memorials are etched in our granite facades but they are scorched in our consciousness," says Steve Banko, a veteran who was awarded both the Purple Heart and Silver Star, "The embodiment of what Abraham Lincoln called the last full measure of devotion."
The Purple Heart is awarded to those wounded or killed while serving with the armed forces.
