GRAND ISLAND, NY (WKBW) -- The ongoing South Grand Island Bridge deck replacement project went well beyond the scheduled 6:00 a.m. deadline Wednesday, causing commuter headaches well into the afternoon.

Construction apparently was delayed as workers had difficulty removing the old concrete decks on the bridge. Officials estimate the bridge will reopen around 1:00 p.m.

The construction company working on the project now faces fines for every minute past 6:00 a.m. that the bridge remains closed, and will incur large overtime costs as workers continue to work on the project.
