FREDONIA, NY ( WKBW ) An apartment fire spread through three floors of a building in downtown Fredonia before firefighters could bring it under control.

Just before 9:00pm Monday night, fire crews responded to a call at 5 East Main Street in the Village of Fredonia. The first floor houses a wireless phone company, but the remaining floors contain ten different apartments. All the occupants were able to escape the building without injury.

The initial investigation into the fire shows that a carelessly lit candle in a 2nd floor apartment could have cased the fire. Fire officials think that candle lit a mattress on fire, spreading flames to a wall and up to the 3rd and 4th floors.

Crews from surrounding towns assisted for almost three hours in knocking down the blaze which has been ruled an accident.

Eyewitness News will have the latest on the fire and people displaced.
