We are exactly one year away from a big change to the way you watch television.
Come February 17 2009 all television stations in the US will broadcast through a digital signal only. This means that if you're tv is not digital ready and you still use an antenna , you're picture may go blank. Here are some answers to your questions from the F.C.C. 1.) What is the digital television tranisition? answer: At midnight on feb. 17, 2009 all full power television stations across the u.s. will stop broadcasting in analog and switch to 100% digital broadcasting. It will provide a clearer picture and more programming options. It will also free up more air space for use by emergency responders. 2.) Will my television work on February 17, 2009? answer: Analog television sets receiving free tv with antenna will not work after Feb. 17, 2009. Television viewers with these sets that are not connected to a pay tv service will need to take action before Feb. 17, 2009, to ensure their tv sets continue to work. 3.) What are my options so I can continue to watch television after Feb. 17, 2009? answer: Consumers have a variety of options. If you're not sure, take a quiz at www.dtvtransition.org. Options to explore include: a.) Keep your existing analog television set and purchase a tv converter box. The box plugs into your tv and will keep it working after feb. 17, 2009 b.) Connect to cable, satellite, or other pay service, or c.) Purchase a television with a digital tuner 4.) What is a tv converter box? answer: A tv converter box is a new device which will be made available in the spring of 2008. It plugs into your analog television set to ensure your tv will work on Feb. 17, 2009. The box is a one time purchase and expected to cost, on average $60.00. The US government is giving out coupons to help you purchase one through the tv converter box program. 5.) What is the tv converter box program? answer: Congress created the converter box program for households wishing to keep using their analog tv sets after Feb. 17, 2009. The program allows u.s. households to apply for two $40.00 coupons to purchase converter boxes. 6.) How do I get my coupons? answer: Between Jan. 1, 2008 and March 31, 2009 consumers can apply for up to two $40.00 coupons per household by calling 1-888- dtv-2009 (1-888-388-2009), by going online at www.dtv2009.gov, or by mailing their application to po box 2000, portland, or 97208- 2000. Coupons will be mailed to requesters. 7.) Where can I use my coupon? answer: When you receive your coupon a list of participating stores will be included. 8.) How do I install the converter box? answer: Converter boxes plug into your tv sets either in the front or the back, depending on your tv. You will still need your antenna, which works with the tv converter box and your over the air signal will still be free. Each tv converter box will come with installation directions from the manufacturer. 9.) Will the transition affect me? answer: You will need to take action before Feb. 17, 2009 if you are currently watching tv using only an antenna on an analog tv set that is not connected to cable or another pay service. If you own a tv set with a digital tuner or subscribe to a pay service you will likely continue to receive tv programming as usual after Feb. 17, 2009.
